HOP: Human and Organisational Performance. 3hr Workshop (online)

14 April 2026: 1pm-4pm BST (UK time)

When things go wrong at work, what happens next?

More rules? More reminders? More finger pointing?

Human and Organisational Performance (HOP) offers a different starting point – one that takes human fallibility seriously without lowering standards, and focuses on learning rather than blame.

This introductory workshop is for people who are curious about HOP and want to understand what it actually looks like in practice – beyond the slogans.

You’ll explore how HOP helps organisations build cultures where people can do their best work in the real conditions they face, not the idealised ones we design on paper.

The five principles that underpin HOP

HOP is often summarised through five core principles:
  • People make mistakes
  • Blame fixes nothing
  • Context drives behaviour
  • Learning is vital
  • Response matters

In this workshop, we don’t treat these as statements to agree with, but as a scaffold for thinking differently about performance, failure, accountability and learning.

Human and Organisational Performance

What we'll explore together

This is not a health and safety workshop – though it draws on safety science. The ideas apply wherever people are trying to do complex, pressured work.

We’ll look at:

  • What HOP is – and where it’s genuinely helpful (and where it’s perhaps less so)
  • Safety I and Safety II: what we learn from different approaches
  • Human error: types, traps and common misunderstandings
  • Work-as-Imagined vs Work-as-Done – and why the gap matters
  • Blame, accountability, hindsight bias and “what should have happened”
  • Local rationality, production pressure and normalisation of risk
  • How Learning Teams can transform the way we work and learn

Throughout, we’ll connect concepts to real organisational situations and keep the session rooted in the messy complexity of real work.

Who this workshop is for

This session is particularly valuable for practitioners, managers, consultants and trainers across any sector who:

  • are uncomfortable with blame-based responses but unsure what replaces them
  • want better learning from incidents, feedback or failure
  • are curious about HOP but wary of buzzwords
  • care about performance and people

What we’ll share works best where there is a genuine desire to improve systems, not simply correct individuals.
